Private Mariner won this honour for creeping through wire entanglements at Cambrin on the night of 22nd May 1915. He reached a German machine gun emplacement, climbed the parapet and dropped bombs, scaring the enemy off. He was compelled to lie still while the enemy swept the wire entanglements with bullets, but returned safe after 1½ hour's absence.
